Five Perennials For A Shade Garden
We all know that flowers love sunshine, but did you realize that there are perennials that love the shade?
If you plant a shade garden you will find that you can actually bring a lounge chair, a nice cool drink , maybe a book or magazine or just sit and watch the birds and butterflies.
When planning your shade garden you will need to plant taller plants in the back, medium growing in the middle and shorter or ground cover plants in front.
Since most perennials only bloom for a short time, you ?ll want to plant them so that you will always have color in the garden. Stage the planting so that each area has a colorful blooming plant for the entire season.
Here's a list of some perennials that thrive in the shade:
Foxglove
This is a great plant for the back row of the garden as it can grow to 5 feet tall. It comes in a large variety of colors and has large spikes filled with bell shaped flowers. This beautiful flower is highly toxic if ingested so use caution if you have children or pets
Lily Of The Valley
This lovely fragrant plant has dainty white bell shaped flowers. It makes a perfect for a ground cover or the front of the garden as it grows to only about 6" tall.
Astibe
You can make a whole garden just with this 1 flower because it comes in 3 ?sizes? that grow to 20", 30" and 40" in a variety of colors! It looks best planted in groups and has clumps of fluffy flower spikes.
Louisiana Iris
This plant grows to about 2 ft. tall, it looks great with its velvety purple black flower that will produce blooms well into June. They look awesome when planted in groups.
Virginia Blue Bells
This medium sized plant grows to about 2 feet in height and has lavender bell shaped clusters.
Despite its fragile appearance it is very easy to grow and its also very hardy.
