When it comes to decorating a child's room, your approach should be much different from an adult bedroom.
Make your child's room a fun place to play, have a desk for reading and working on projects, an area for game playing, socializing with friends, with comfort and functionality.
Before you start redecorating your child's room remember he or she will be a teen before you know it so make sure the large purchases will carry them through the years.
Decorating your child's room should be a fun and memorable experience for you and your child, so take your time and enjoy spending this time with your child.
Try these eight simple strategies to help create a space that will make you both happy.
Talk to your child.
What are their likes and dislikes? Are there certain fairy tale or cartoon characters your child like? What is their favorite color? What type of activities does your child like?
Allow your child to help.
Let you child suggest fabrics, colors and ways to display their collectibles.
Make the room functional.
Set up different areas of the room for playing games, a comfortable chair or rocker for reading or listening to music, an entertainment center and a desk for activities.
Make storage a top priority.
Try shelving, large decorative lined wicker baskets, under bed drawer and closets that contain plenty of shelving and racks.
Simple Window Treatments.
Avoid long draperies. Shades, canvas blinds and shorter curtains are safer choices. Natural daylight has a calming effect on children and doesn't make them feel like they are shut in.
Choose the right lighting.
When decorating your child’s room include both task lighting for homework and reading, and soothing light for quieter times. A night light is also important.
Add color and texture with paint and wallpaper.
You can apply borders along the top edges of the walls, and clouds or stars on the ceiling. Make sure walls are washable, so if you are using paint, choose a semi-gloss or gloss finish. Bright colors are favored by children, one bright colored wall will suffice.
Working together with your child is a great bonding opportunity. Children love being involved in making decisions. Have fun and...get to decorating!
