Homemade Cocktail Recipes - Social Entertaining

Just what cocktails should be, how to make them, how to serve them and when to serve them. Perfectly acceptable for amateurs, maiden aunts and such...

These concoctions serve three entirely different needs, and should be chosen and prepared accordingly.

First: They provide a graceful and a pleasant way to drink for those who enjoy the relaxation or the stimulation of alcohol

Second: They are excellent stimulator's of appetite when they are not sweet, and thus provide a perfect before dinner course which awakens the palate while it relaxes the nerves.

Third: They offer the seldom drinker a pleasantly-flavored small quantity of alcohol to drink for social purposes. Use about 1 ounce liquor for each serving.

Apricot Brandy Sour

Apricot Brandy, delicious for a cocktail party or an after dinner drink.

  • 6 parts Brandy
  • 2 parts lime juice
  • 1 part Apricot Cordial
  • lemon slices
  • cherries

Shake with ice, and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with a lemon slice, top with a cherry, and serve.

Bloody Mary

Perfect drink for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon of ball game watching.

  • 6 parts tomato/V8 juice
  • 3 parts vodka
  • 1 part lemon juice
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce per drink

Shake with ice, strain into juice glass.

Try also adding salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, tabasco, horseradish and celery salt.

Garnish glass with lemon wedge, carrot stick, celery stick and or olives.

Strawberry Daiquiri

This frosty strawberry slush is great with or without the rum

  • 4 ounces frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup rum
  • 1/8 cup lime juice
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup lemon-lime flavored carbonated beverage
  • 6 cups ice

Combine all ingredients in blender. Blend until smooth.

Pour into glass, garnish with strawberry slices.

Martini

Suitable for a cocktail party or after dinner drink.

  • 5 parts Gin
  • 1 part French (dry) Vermouth

Stir with ice, strain into cocktail glass containing a small olive. Or, twist lemon peel over drink, and drop in.

Important: Use good Gin. Some extremists double or even triple the Gin. Not necessary or recommended.

Muscadine Wine

This is a very easy method to make your own wine. The hard part is waiting for it to ferment.

  • 1/2 gallon fruit
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 2 c. water
  • 1/2 pkg. yeast

Crush fruit by hand until all pulp is out of hulls. Put all of this in a gallon jug.

Add sugar, water and yeast. Stir really good.

Seal loosely with saran wrap and rubber band, let stand for 5 to 7 days.

Then strain through cheese cloth or gauze. Repeat this process until wine is clear. This may take 3 or 4 times.

Store in a cool, dry place.

Most fruits and berries can be made into wine using this method.

Rhett Butler

Named after the classic figure from Gone With The Wind

  • 6 parts Southern Comfort
  • 1 part lemon juice
  • 1 part lime juice
  • 1 part Curacao

Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

Shake well

Strain into a chilled cocktail glass

Garnish with a lemon peel

Scarlett O'Hara

Named for the Southern Belle in the movie Gone With The Wind

  • 6 parts Southern Comfort
  • 2 parts lime juice
  • 1 part cranberry juice or Grenadine

Pour southern comfort and cranberry juice or Grenadine into a glass filled with ice.

Fill with lime juice. Stir well.

Garnish with a lime wedge.

Jack Rose

Great cocktail for a dinner party

  • 6 parts Apple Brandy
  • 2 part lemon juice
  • 1 part Grenadine

Shake with ice, and strain into Cocktail glass. Raw Applejack will spoil this, or any other drink; so don't make this unless you have good Apple Brandy.

Mai Tai

This is a very popular drink at parties down south.

  • 1-1/2 teaspoons dark rum
  • 1 tablespoon light rum
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons 151 proof rum
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons almond flavored syrup
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons orange curacao (orange flavored liqueur)
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons simple syrup
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • 4 limes, juiced

Combine all three rums, almond syrup, orange liqueur, simple syrup and lime juice in a large jar or shaker. Stir and top off with orange juice.

Serve over ice and garnish with straw, pineapple stick and a small orchid if you have one, if not you may use a small umbrella. Serves one

Pina Colada

Another huge hit!!

  • 3/4 cup rum
  • 1-1/2 cups pineapple juice
  • 1-1/2 cups coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons white sugar

Combine pineapple juice, coconut milk, sugar and rum in blender. Blend until smooth. Makes 6 servings.

Gin Sour

Another huge hit!!

  • 6 parts Gin
  • 2 parts lemon juice
  • 1 part sugar syrup

A Whiskey Sour with Gin instead of Whiskey. Lime may be substituted for lemon juice - in which case you have a dry Gimlet.
